The morphology of cells can be important in many contexts. In culture the morphology indicates the status of the cells, both in terms of the health of the cells and in the case of primary isolates the differentiation state may be critical. Also for those culturing embryonic stem cells the differentiation state is vital.
For this reason the surface of the culture vessel must be uniform and optically clear to allow microscopy of the cells. When growing the cells on microscope slides the surface chosen must also be considered in the subsequent study of the cells. The surface must be compatible with any staining, fixing and mounting procedures, which are planned. Specific application information is available, see:
