Introduction

We offer barcoded products - either as part of our standard assortment or as customised products, e.g. barcoded CryoTube™ Vials, plates and flasks.

A barcode is a piece of automatic identification technology that stores information. Barcodes are "machine-readable codes" which can be used to reduce errors, process many samples, track products and many more applications.

The advantages of using barcodes are:

Reduce human errors
Improve efficiency: manual and automatic
Improve quality controls
Reduce handling costs
Demotivating job functions are reduced

All barcodes have "visual-readable-numbers".

Available Codes

We offer three different code types:

Code 128
This is an alphanumerical code, meaning that it contains both numbers and characters/letters. Code 128 characters comprise three bars and three spaces with three different subsets A, B or C. Code 128 is our recommended barcode of choice because of the compressed design, widely supported, flexibility and data security.
Code 39
This is also an alphanumerical code, but with a lower density than Code 128. Code 39 has fewer characters/letters but is printed in the same space. Code 39 characters have five bars and four spaces. Code 39 is also widely supported, flexible and has good data security.
Interleaved 2 of 5
This code is numerical (no letters) and self-checking to improve the data security. Each Interleaved 2 of 5 character encodes two digits (one in the bars and one in the spaces) and therefore the code has a higher density. Interleave 2 of 5 always requires an equal number of characters (including check digit) to be printed. Due to the design of Interleaved 2 of 5 there is a risk of truncation of the sequence when scanned, which is why Nunc recommends a check digit and that a fixed number of digits mode is chosen in the reading software if possible.

ANSI-Grade Scale

American National Standard Institute is a private, non-governmental organisation that administers and coordinates voluntary barcode quality standards. With the three mentioned codes, we follow the standardised ANSI X3.182-1990 guideline (Barcode Print Quality-Guideline).

Nunc barcode products strive to achieve a high ANSI standard and a high first read rate.

We use Code 128, Code 39 and Interleaved 2 of 5. Our standard code complies with the ANSI-Grade standard.

Nunc will take on the responsibility to provide you with a unique identifier for each plate (barcode label) that will not be duplicated within a catalogue number. For future reorders we will begin your next sequence from where the last sequence finished.

Barcoded CryoTube™ Vials

General capabilities

We use Code 128 or 39 (label only) and Interleaved 2 of 5. Our standard code complies with the ANSI-Grade standard.

Barcodes can be placed on CryoTube™ Vials in two different ways:

Pad-print/Ink Jet
This is done by printing directly on the CryoTube™ Vials: first a white background is made with pad-print, then the Ink Jet technique is used to print the black codes on the white background. These codes can withstand temperature fluctuations, like freezing in liquid nitrogen and subsequent defrosting. Only ten digits Interleaved 2 of 5 is possible with this method. Generally we recommend 9 digits and a check digit.
Label
Another possibility would be our recently developed label. This solution is unique because the codes can withstand most chemicals, e.g. toluene, acetone and DMSO. Furthermore, like the pad-print version these codes can withstand temperature fluctuations, like freezing in liquid nitrogen and subsequent defrosting. The coded label is also resistant to autoclaving. The barcodes are printed in a higher ANSI-Grade than the ink jetted version. Number of digits depends on the code type.

When you require a barcoded CryoTube™ Vial, we can offer two different solutions: a Nunc Matrix product as well as barcoded CryoTubes™ with free choice of sequence and code.

The barcoded product will receive a unique catalogue number, and Nunc verifies for duplicates within a catalogue number. When reordering the sequence of the new series will start where it ended in the previous production.

Barcoded Flask

Nunc offers a barcoded 175 cm² flask compatible with the SelecT from The Automation Partnership. The barcode can also be read by conventional barcode scanners.

The flask is a conventional 175 cm² Nunclon™ Δ treated flask with filter cap and with a 10-digit Code 128 prefix NU barcode on the side.

Handheld barcode scanners

Nunc offers 2 different handheld "plug and play" scanners: one connected through a computers USB slot and one where the keyboard slot is used (the keyboard operates independently of the scanner function).

The scanners automatically switch between Code 128, Code 39, Code Interleave and several other barcodes. They just have to be in contact with the barcode to be read.
